After another very short night because of very early flight (5:00) we arrive in Mekele, one of the most important towns in the Tigray region. This is the region where Ecover is planning to support WaterAid projects. We were warmly greeted by people from EOC aka the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. They are WaterAid’s active partners in this region. After a great many discussions it became clear to me that these people know exactly what they’re about and what they want to do with the support offered by Ecover. The sincere concern expressed by these people and the maximum way they wanted to make use of the available ecological means are two things that left a deep impression on me.
That evening, they invited us for dinner at a hotel-restaurant and just as I was getting ready to dig into my ‘tibs’ (deliciously spicy lamb) everything turned black before my eyes. Apparently, power failures are a normal daily occurrence in large areas of Ethiopia. I was able to locate my tibs thanks to modern technology: by the light of my cell phone! It does have its charms, dinner by cell phone light.
