Latrines

Sanitation is a vital part of the project, and installing latrines at people's house features high on the list. Without a latrine, people have to defecate in fields close to their houses, which is unhygienic and unpleasant, especially for women. It also increases the risk of spreading disease as there is nowhere to wash afterwards.

We met Hilfi who showed us her latrine which was situated outside of the compound to her house and talked about how she and her family wash their hands.

“We used to defecate in the open field. Next year I will construct another latrine in the compound. After I use the latrine I am dirty so clean my hands.”

Prior to the construction, Hilfi’s husband had tried to dig a pit latrine unsuccessfully. She said her children used to get ill with diarrhoea but she didn’t know the cause – but now since the project has been in place she realises the importance of hygiene and sanitation.
