The project work in Adiger is now funding the construction of bio-gas latrines. We were taken to the first model situated at the house of Kaleay Hapos, chairman of the water committee. The biogas system works by collecting the waste from the latrine, mixing with animal faeces and storing in a chamber for 7 days. This then creates gas, which is piped off and used to light a stove and a gas lamp in the house. The biogas chamber takes 7 days to fill and then the gas is continuously available.
What was striking here was the evidence of recycling! Nothing is wasted.
Construction of latrines is another way to stop the transmission of disease and the education surrounding this is equally important. Initially, people were sceptical of the bio gas system but once they realised its worth, and that by keeping their compound clean and disposing of their waste properly meant they were less likely to get ill, they are now all keen to have a bio gas system in place!
